what is spading?

Spading is a proven method of mixing soil up to a depth of 400mm. It is used to ameliorate non-wetting sandy soils improving productivity, through increased moisture retention and subsequent increased yields.

Although a relatively new process in Australia, trial work is proving that the process results in significant productivity increases.

Spading can be used:

  • As a method in its own entirety, burying non-wetting soils
  • To incorporate soil additives such as clay, green manure, dry matter, trace elements and organic fertilisers

benefits of spading

Single Pass

The spading process is done in a single pass reducing soil compaction and the overall cost of the project

No compaction
Because the spader is rotating in the direction of travel there is zero wheel slip and no weight transferred onto the tractor resulting in no compaction. Unlike using a plough or rotary hoe there in no hard pan created.

Lime, trace elements and green/dry matter incorporation
Lime, trace elements, dry and green matter can all be incorporated at the same time saving on overall costs

Greater lifting of subsoil and burying of topsoil
Compared to using a rotary hoe, spading has a greater lifting action which results in greater lifting of the subsoil and burying of the topsoil
